The importance of good management

Did you know? 82% of managers are “accidental managers” – but what could that mean for your business?

Current research shows that 82% of managers are “accidental managers”. These are people that become managers with no experience or qualifications.

Although internal development and promotion is good for business, the rise in accidental managers can cause many issues for businesses, including –

  • Inconsistent management
  • Lack of confidence to deal with difficult issues and manage teams
  • Failure to implement and develop a positive culture
  • Lack of trust and confidence in management from the workforce
  • Uncompliant management with legislation and requirements
  • Failure to provide training and development opportunities

Are you an accidental manager yourself, or can you recognise that you have these within your organisations?

If so, there are many steps you can take to ensure that individuals are supported and developed as they enter into, or progress within, a management career. This might include things like –

  • Regular appraisals and one to ones
  • Coaching
  • Providing feedback, or encouraging managers to request feedback from their colleagues/teams
  • Succession planning activities – clear goals and expectations to work towards
  • Buddying or mentoring schemes
  • Training
  • Behaviour profiling

Here at HR Prime we work with many organisations to support their leaders and managers to develop. We offer a number of free training opportunities including a monthly Lunch and Learn session held on Zoom, as well as more structured managers training programmes and DISC behaviour profiling.

Research finds that 67% of people have left, or would leave, a job because of bad management. From our experience, companies who embrace a culture of learning and development, creating a safe environment for managers to progress, whilst leading by example and ensuring that good practice is led from the top, are the companies who embrace change and succeed in their plans.
