The Bradwell B team is pleased to announce the first stage of public consultation on our proposals for a new nuclear power station at Bradwell-on-Sea in Essex.
The consultation will start on Wednesday 4th March 2020, running for 12 weeks until 27th May 2020. It will include 15 public exhibition events and these will be your first chance to review our proposals, engage with our team, and importantly, provide us with your feedback.
Our aim is to submit an application for development consent a few years from now – during this period we will be undertaking formal consultation, as well as continuing to engage with the local community to understand your views.
Your feedback will be incredibly important in helping us shape our proposals, and we hope you get involved.
ABOUT THE PROJECT
The Bradwell B site was designated by the government in 2011 as being potentially suitable for Nuclear New Build. In the past couple of years, we have been undertaking extensive surveys, along with ground and marine investigations to give us a detailed understanding of what can be achieved at the site. Although still early days, we want to share our initial proposals with you now so that there is plenty of time to shape them together.
Our initial proposals are for a twin reactor power station, able to generate enough low carbon electricity to power around 4 million homes. Thousands of jobs will be created during construction, whilst the operating power station will provide hundreds of jobs for at least 60 years. Supporting skills and education programmes in the local area will be key to allowing local people to take advantage of these opportunities.
The local and regional economy will also benefit, with significant opportunities for the local supply chain.
THE NEED FOR BRADWELL B
The UK urgently needs new investment in energy infrastructure to replace old, fossil fuel-based electricity generation sources. Since 2010, 26 power stations have closed, which equates to 20% of the UK’s generation capacity. By the end of the decade, a further 35% of existing generation capacity will close, and so decisive action must be taken now.
Whilst solar, wind and other renewable energy sources will play an important part in meeting the government’s goal of net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, nuclear energy will be vital in meeting the National Grid’s baseline energy needs.
