Navigate the EU's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) with Confidence

Essex Chambers' Comprehensive Support for UK Exporters

As the European Union intensifies its commitment to carbon neutrality, the introduction of the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) presents both challenges and opportunities for UK exporters. To assist businesses in adapting to this evolving landscape, Essex Chambers of Commerce has a dedicated CBAM Consultancy Service, complemented by a free EU CBAM Health Check Tool.

Understanding CBAM
CBAM is an EU regulation designed to prevent carbon leakage by ensuring that imported goods are subject to the same carbon pricing as those produced within the EU. Initially targeting products such as cement, iron and steel, aluminium, fertilisers, electricity, and hydrogen, the mechanism requires EU importers to report the embedded greenhouse gas emissions of these goods.

Implications for UK Exporters
Since July 1, 2024, EU importers have been mandated to use actual emissions data, rather than default values, when reporting to the European Commission. This shift places an increased responsibility on UK exporters to provide detailed emissions data, encompassing both direct and indirect emissions. Failure to supply accurate information may result in higher CBAM costs for EU importers, potentially affecting the competitiveness of UK exports.

Essex Chambers' CBAM Consultancy Service
To support businesses in navigating these requirements, Essex Chambers offers a bespoke CBAM Consultancy Service. Delivered by experienced consultants, the service is available both on-site and remotely, tailored to meet individual business needs. Key offerings include:

•    Comprehensive understanding of CBAM's scope and impact
•    Identification of affected products within a company's portfolio
•    Accurate measurement and calculation of embedded emissions
•    Development of practical reporting frameworks
•    Assistance in ensuring compliance with EU import partners' requirements

Free EU CBAM Health Check Tool
In addition to consultancy services, Essex Chambers provides a free, interactive EU CBAM Health Check Tool.
This tool enables UK exporters to:

  • Complete a brief questionnaire in approximately five minutes
  • Receive a personalised readiness report utilising a traffic light system to highlight:
    • Urgent areas requiring action
    • Areas needing improvement
    • Compliance areas already in place

Should further support be necessary, businesses can schedule a complimentary session with a CBAM expert.

Preparing for the Future
While the current focus is on meeting EU requirements, it's important to note that the UK plans to implement its own CBAM legislation by 2027. Proactively engaging with Essex Chambers' services can help businesses maintain strong relationships with EU clients and position themselves advantageously for upcoming domestic regulations.
